The group's sound distilled from a broad range of influences that stretch from classic Chicago free jazz thru pop music, punk rock, math metal, and harsh noise. 4/8 Tuesday (JG) 8 pm Bad Touch Nate Radley (guitar) Ted Poor (drums) Gary Versace (organ) Lorne Stillman (alto saxophone) 10 pm Musekiwa Chingodza Musekiwa Chingodza (mbira, voice) Musekiwa Chingodza was born into a family of great mbira players in Mwangara village, Murewa, Zimbabwe, in 1970. He began playing mbira at the age of five and is self-taught. Through listening to other gwenyambira, or great mbira players, he developed a strong attachment to and love for mbira music. He says, “Our music is both medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and the dead.” In 1991 Musekiwa was a key member of the band Panjea, founded by Chris Berry. He composed the hit song “Ganda” on Panjea’s Zimbabwean album. 4/9 Wednesday (TD) 8 pm El Gallo Rojo Records presents: ZENOPHILIA Anthony Coleman (piano) Zeno De Rossi (drums) Danilo Gallo (bass) Francesco Bigoni (sax) FROM ITALY 10 pm A Touch Of Noir film/performance Herb Robertson (trumpet, brass, megaphones, etc.) Lotte Anker (saxophones) Terry McManus (guitars) Gerry Hemingway (percussion) Matt Darriau (reeds) “A Touch of Noir” brings about a new music approach to classic film noir history correcting the disembodiment that existed in the original scores, making a dark and ominous dramatic effect. The improvisers will combine free improvisation and some written excerpts with the film “A Touch of Noir” simultaneously. The effect of this live performance will instantly create a score for the film and two separate media experiences or one total experience together. Film noir and spontaneous music convey an interesting analysis on life’s improvisations.
