He studied at Juilliard and in his youth played/toured/recorded with Albert Ayler, Amiri Baraka, Don Cherry, Benny Goodman, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Haynes, Steve Lacy, Charles Mingus, Gerry Mulligan, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner… This was followed by a long period of hard times when Henry did not have a musical instrument, so he took up the pen and wrote poetry instead. Now, in the present era, his bandmates have included Rashied Ali, Marshall Allen, Fred Anderson, Amiri Baraka (again), Marilyn Crispell, Andrew Cyrille, Bill Dixon, Dave Douglas, Paul Dunmall, Edward “Kidd” Jordan, Nathaniel Mackey, Roscoe Mitchell, David Murray, William Parker, Marc Ribot, Wadada Leo Smith, Sekou Sundiata, Cecil Taylor (again), Edwin Torres, and many more. After majoring in music at the University of Hawaii and graduating from the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 1965 with degrees in composition/arranging and performance, DAVE BURRELL quickly established himself as a most innovative and original musician, collaborating with emerging leaders in the revolutionary avant-jazz music of the '60s, and joining the groups of saxophonists Marion Brown, Pharoah Sanders, and Archie Shepp. Dave's dynamic compositions, with deep blues and gospel roots, recall the tradition of Edward Kennedy “Duke" Ellington, James P. Johnson, and Jelly Roll Morton, as well as “avant-garde” composers such as John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. He has scored several films and can be heard on over 115 stellar recordings, including 30 under his own name. Dave has given master classes on many campuses and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards. www.daveburrell.com

Tyshawn’s recent music has focused on concepts derived from the music of Morton Feldman and Zen Buddhism, using these models for interpreting determinate music, acting as principal generators for the discovery of ideas. Mr. Sorey has given many lectures and master classes on improvisation, composition, contemporary drumming, ensemble playing, and critical theory at several high-level educational institutions.
